“Learning is least useful when it is private and hidden; it is most powerful when it becomes public and communal. Learning flourishes when we take what we think we know and offer it as a community property among fellow learners so that it can be tested, examined, challenged, and improved before we internalize it.” (Lee S. Shulman, Teaching As Community Property)
This is the blog of Thomas Wilk, currently an adjunct instructor at Hudson Valley Community College. The purpose of the writings here will be to make public the learning processes involved in attempting to successfully teach liberal studies at a community college level.
Currently I am teaching Composition One and Two. I will periodically invite my students to post here to intervene and weigh-in on my ideas about learning, writing, reading, and understanding. As they engage me in this space, I will be better equipped to guide and mentor them in their learning development (which is the service they are paying HVCC for!)
